Today I'll cover the top 5 skills that a freelance web designer should have based on my research on some larger freelance internet sites such as ELance.
Top 5 web design skills in demand
HTML / CSS: HTML is fairly obvious but still needs mentioning. No matter what language or system you use to create your web site or maintain that web site, it ultimately outputs HTML.
- PHP5: I was a little surprised that PHP was in such high demand. Makes sense for most web designers though. PHP is a free web design language and can take care of most of the functionality required for most web sites and applications.
- SQL: SQL and PHP, or the language of your choice, go hand in hand. Although not a required skill for all web designers, it is required for any web developer working on commercial web sites.
- Adobe Flash CS4: Flash has come a long way since it was just a tool to make animations. The latest release of Flash CS4 has added many features any web professional will find useful. Also, with a better implementation of object oriented actionscripting, it will allow web developers to build great looking robust web sites and applications.
- E-Commerce / Web Marketing: As more and more people become comfortable shopping online, more site owners are looking for ways to generate revenue from their web site. A great value add for any web designer is giving your client the ability to sell products online. I've developed a simple shopping cart that works with PayPal Google Checkout and most major credit cards. Contact me if you need a simple shopping cart for your web site.
